How to Make Ecommerce Website in WordPress for Beginners

You might follow the steps below to create a fully functional ecommerce website in WordPress.

Step 1 – Decide What to Sell and Research Buyers and the Market

Research Buyers and the Market

You’ve probably heard the famous proverb “Look before you leap.” So, first, you need to decide what you want to sell before creating an ecommerce website.

Start with selecting a niche. Spend a good amount of time seeking and picking a niche and products to sell. Try to follow what’s currently trending (keep an eye on social media and Google Trends to track trends) and check reviews of the most loved products of diverse niches.

Once you choose a niche and products, research your target audience. Understand their needs, demographics, and culture. Learn about their problems and ensure your products solve them.

After that, research your competitors, conduct a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis, and learn about their customers and marketing strategies. Try to beat them with your products and marketing strategies.

Step 2 – Purchase a Domain and Connect It with a Web Host

After picking a niche and conducting thorough research on the market and buyers, you need to plan on building your ecommerce store. Start by selecting a domain name and a hosting provider. Don’t get overwhelmed if you don’t know anything about these. Instead, read on.

What’s a Domain Name and Hosting?

A domain is an address of your website. Imagine this: someone asks you where you live. You give them your address so they can visit you at home. A domain name works the same way. It lets web visitors find and visit your website.

On the contrary, a web host is where your website lives. It’s your site’s home. We believe you now better understand what a domain and a hosting are. Let’s now discuss what to consider while choosing a domain and a hosting for your ecommerce business.

Best Practices to Follow While Buying a Domain and a Hosting Provider

When picking a domain name for your ecommerce business, follow the factors below to avoid pitfalls.

  • Select an available domain name, free from any trademarks, and reflects your brand and product categories (Use domain name generators for ideas)
  • Prioritize a memorable and short domain name that is easy to write and spell and doesn’t contain special characters and numbers
  • Choose the correct domain name extension (a suffix at the end of your domain) for your ecommerce website (e.g., .com, .shop, .store, etc.)
  • Get a domain that features keywords related to your business for SEO benefits
  • Check the domain price and renewal options
  • Register your domain with one of the best domain name registrars, such as IONOS, Dreamhost, Namecheap, etc.
  • Consider including domain security (SSL certificate) and privacy protections to hide your personal information

Okay, let’s now talk about what to look at when choosing a hosting provider for your ecommerce website.

  • Go with a hosting provider that guarantees a high uptime (at least 99.99%)
  • Pick a hosting plan that allows you to accommodate future growth in traffic easily
  • Make sure the hosting plan comes with excellent bandwidth and storage
  • Check if the hosting provider provides robust security protection  (DDoS protection)
  • Ensure your chosen hosting provider offers automatic, frequent backups
  • Select a hosting provider that offers built-in ecommerce features, like shopping cart functionality
  • Choose a hosting provider that provides an easy-to-use control panel
  • Inspect the quality and availability of customer support
  • Compare pricing plans and renewal fees with other contenders
  • Use a CDN to ensure fast content delivery in diverse geographical locations

These are the best practices to follow when you choose a domain and a hosting provider for your ecommerce store. We’ll now discuss what to do next once you find your desired domain and connect it with a hosting provider.

N:B: We avoided demonstrating how to connect a domain to a hosting provider because different providers use different methods. You can contact your hosting provider to learn the steps for making an accurate domain connection.

Step 3 – Select a Website Builder or CMS

Select a Website Builder or CMS

Now that you’ve purchased a domain and connected it with a hosting provider, you need to select a website builder or CMS (Content Management System) for your website. Here’s what to consider when picking one.

  • Select a CMS with a user-friendly interface, drag-and-drop functionality, and no coding skill required if you lack technical expertise
  • Pick a CMS that can easily handle increased traffic as your business grows
  • Inspect if the platform lets you create a responsive and lightweight ecommerce store
  • Ensure it supports the easy integration of third-party tools and services
  • Make sure the CMS provides freedom of design customization
  • Choose a CMS with robust security features to protect customer data
  • Check the CMS’s ability to manage ecommerce store functionalities like product variations, promotions, customer reviews, etc.
  • Go with a CMS that lets you easily optimize your website for SEO
  • Check the availability and quality of customer support
  • Compare your chosen CMS’s pricing plans with others
  • Read customer reviews

Lastly, finalize a CMS. We chose WordPress since it meets all the criteria above, is open-source, and is free to use. So, we’ll log in to our cPanel (you’ll get it after purchasing a hosting plan) and install WordPress.

It’s easy to install—just a few clicks, and you can set a username and password. That’s it. If you have trouble installing this CMS, consider contacting your hosting provider for a smooth installation.

We skipped showing you how to install WordPress on cPanel since it’s SUPER EASY. Instead, this article will address the challenging tasks of creating an ecommerce store.

Step 4 – Install an E-commerce-Friendly Theme

At this stage, you need to choose and install an e-commerce-friendly theme for your store. However, the question is how to get one and what to consider when seeking one.

Read the criteria below for your answer:

  • Check if the theme has a clear visual hierarchy with easy-to-find product information and navigation.
  • Ensure it adapts seamlessly to different screen sizes.
  • Your chosen theme should clearly display high-quality product images, detailed descriptions, variations, etc.
  • It needs to come with search functionality and ajax filter
  • Your selected theme should feature a simple checkout process
  • It should allow seamless payment gateway integration
  • The theme needs to load fast to reduce cart abandonment
  • It should be compatible with your chosen CMS and other necessary tools
  • The theme needs to provide you with customization freedom
  • It should enable customers to leave reviews and ratings and suggest related products
  • The theme should let shoppers share products on social media

Since we’ll install the theme on WordPress, we ensure that our chosen theme works with Elementor, a famous drag-and-drop page builder, and WooCommerce, a popular e-commerce WordPress plugin, alongside check marking the criteria above.

Okay, we chose Astra, which will work great for this tutorial. However, we recommend picking a paid theme to build and operate your e-commerce stores professionally.

Visit this page on the best WooCommerce themes to find a top-grade, e-commerce-friendly theme that meets your needs. Let’s now install and activate Astra theme.

Follow these steps to install and activate the theme:

  1. Log in to your WordPress Admin Panel and navigate to Appearance > Themes.
Go to appearance and themes
  1. Then, press “Add New Theme” button on the top left-hand side
Click add new theme button
  1. Type your theme name in the theme search field on the top right-hand side.
Type your theme name
  1. Once you find your preferred theme, click ‘Install’ button.
Hit install button of a theme
  1. Lastly, press ‘Activate’ button.
Press activate button of a theme

That’s how you install and activate a theme in WordPress. You can now visit your website to see its outlook.

Step 5 – Customize Your E-commerce Website

As you can see, our website has a basic outlook, which isn’t ideal for an e-commerce business. So, we’ll customize it to make it professional. Let’s begin.

First, we’ll delete the unnecessary post (Hello world!) from our website. To do that, go to WP Admin Dashboard > Posts > All Posts.

Go to all posts

Then, you’ll see all the posts. Hover your mouse pointer over a post you want to delete. You’ll then notice a few options. Click ‘Trash’ to send the post to the trash.

Click on trash to send a post to the trash

Now, delete this post permanently. To do so, click the ‘Trash’ link at the top.

Click a link to trash

You’ll see the post you sent to the ‘Trash.’ Again, hover the mouse pointer over that post and hit “Delete Permanently.”

Click delete permanently

This way, you can permanently delete any post in WordPress. Now, we’ll discuss another crucial factor people often overlook – setting up your site’s permalink.

If you need to know what a permalink is, here you go: It’s a permanent URL to a particular page, post, or other content on your site.

You need to correctly set the permanent link for your posts and pages to get SEO  (Search Engine Optimization) benefits. Doing so signals search engines that your site’s URLs are well-structured, so search engines can easily interpret your site’s content.

So, let’s appropriately set up our site’s permalink structure.

  1. Go to WP Admin Panel > Settings > Permalinks.
Go to permalinks
  1. Now, head to “Permalink structure” section, click “Post name” radio button, and press “Save Changes” button.
Click post name radio and save changes buttons

That’s it.

At this stage, you need to design your website to look professional. You can start by changing its logo, color palette, typography, and more.

You can accomplish these tasks by following the traditional method or taking a different approach. We’ll take the easy route and customize our site with Elementor, one of the famous WordPress page builders.

Why Elementor? This plugin lets us easily build and customize any web page on WordPress by dragging and dropping elements. It also enables us to do everything from changing global colors to setting up a logo.

That’s why we chose this plugin. In the following sections, we will demonstrate how to use it. Let’s begin.

Install and Activate Elementor

We’ll now install and activate the Elementor plugin to build and customize our e-commerce store. To do so, navigate to WP Admin Panel > Plugins > Add New Plugin.

Go to add new plugin

Afterward, type ‘Elementor’ in the “Search Plugins” field on the top right-hand side to search for this plugin in the plugin repository.

Search for elementor in the plugin search field

Press “Install Now” button of the marked plugin (Elementor) in the screenshot below.

Search for elementor in the plugin search field

Lastly, click ‘Activate’ button.

Press activate button of elementor

Okay, we’ll now start designing our site with this plugin.

Create and Design a Page with Elementor

First, we’ll create a homepage. To do so, go to the WordPress Admin Panel > Pages > Add New Page.

Go to add new page

You’ll then visit Gutenberg, aka the block editor. You can work on this editor to customize a page if you know how to use a block editor. Also, you can design a page with Elementor – the choice is yours.

Anyway, now give your page a title. Write your page title in “Add title” field. Additionally, click the eye icon beside the “Add title” field to turn it on or off. Why?

You can turn it off to prevent the page title from appearing on the front end or on to display it.

Screenshot of Gutenberg editor

Once you have written the page title and turned off the eye icon, click the “Edit with Elementor” button.

Click edit with Elementor button

You’ll now visit the Elementor Editor.

Choose a Color Palette

Let’s determine a color palette for our e-commerce website. If you need to know what a color palette is, here’s the information: It’s a selection of colors used together in design or art. A website’s color palette usually consists of Primary, Secondary, and Accent colors.

The primary color is the dominant color of your site, while the accent color is for headings or post tiles. Lastly, the secondary color contrasts with the other colors to make essential elements of your site stand out, such as CTA buttons.

Let’s now select a color palette. To do so, click the “Site Settings” tool on the toolbar at the top left of Elementor Editor.

Click site settings tool in the Elementor editor

Afterward, navigate to the “Site Settings” panel on the left and select the “Global Colors” configuration option.

Press global colors configuration option

You’ll now see global color settings on the panel. You can change global colors either from the panel or the canvas within Elementor Editor.

Screenshot of global colors

Now, click each color option and select a color from the color picker. You can drag the color sampler to select your desired color on the color picker or insert a hex code of your preferred color in Hexa field within the color picker.

Once you select a color, click “Save Changes” button.

Choose a color and click save changes button

Follow these exact steps to change secondary and accent colors. That’s how you select a color palette for your website.

Select the Typography of Your Site

Like colors, you need to set the typography of your website to make it look professional. Head to Site Settings > Typography on the Elementor Editor to set the typography.

Go to Typography

Then, you’ll notice settings to change your website’s typography and color for body text and headings. Choose each option and its corresponding elements to select its typography and color, and finally, click “Save Changes” button.

Set font and font color
Set a Logo

You can now create a brand logo for your ecommerce store. A logo is essential for your website as it helps you create brand identity. Therefore, first, get a logo designed by a professional logo designer.

You can search for such a person on Fiverr, Upwork, Freelancer, or other marketplaces. Alternatively, design your logo using Canva or other free online logo maker tools. You can even try ChatGPT to create a logo free of cost.

N:B: Create two versions of your logo: one primary logo and the other favicon.

After designing or getting your brand logo, upload it to your ecommerce website. Here’s how you can do it with Elementor.

Just navigate to Site Settings > Site Identity when you’re inside the Editor.

Go to site identity

Here, you’ll find fields and options to write your website name, description (what your site is about), logo, and favicon. Work on each option and click “Save Changes” button.

Create a Hero Section on Homepage

We’ll accomplish this job using the Elementor Canvas and its widgets. Let’s now see how we perform this task.

First, we’ll insert a flexbox container to insert our preferred widgets into that container. Thus, press the ‘+’ icon on the Elementor Canvas or on the top-left toolbar.

Press the plus icon on Elementor canvas

Afterward, select the ‘Flexbox’  layout.

Select the flexbox layout

Then, choose a flexbox structure.

choose a flexbox structure.

You can now see a container on the Elementor Canvas.

Edit this container as you need using the Elementor panel. For instance, change the container’s height and width according to your requirements.

Edit container layout

After customizing the container, click the container’s plus icon to include a widget.

Click the plus icon of a container

Now, look at the Elementor panel on the left-hand side. You’ll see many widgets.

Since we want to add a video to the hero section, we’ll insert the video widget by dragging and dropping it into the container.

include a widget in a container

Afterward, we will upload the video and configure some video settings using ‘Content’ tab on the Elementor panel.

Besides the Content tab, Elementor provides two additional tabs, Style and Advance, to customize a widget. We skip discussing how to use these tabs and their benefits to keep the content compact.

Configure widget settings

Then, add another widget to include necessary texts that align with the video. Click the plus icon at the top left of the toolbar. Search for the ‘Heading’ widget and drag and drop it over the video widget.

Drag and drop heading widget

Write your heading to finish building the hero section. You can be creative and research other ecommerce stores to design your WooCommerce store’s hero image.

That’s how you create a section using Elementor. As you can see, it’s a lengthy process, and you must follow many steps to create just one section. You need to follow these steps to build other homepage sections.

Alternatively, use Elementor’s pre-made blocks and pages to create a section and page instantly. However, you must have the paid Elementor plugin to enjoy that facility.

So, does that mean there’s no other way? Of course not. We’ll show you a time-saving and magical way to create nearly all the necessary pages of a WooCommerce store with a few clicks in the bonus section. Ensure you read that section of this article.

Anyway, once you finish designing the homepage, make sure to click the ‘Publish’ button to make your page visible on the front-end.

Click publish button of Elementor

That’s how you create and design a page. We know we skipped many steps related to page customization because we wanted to avoid showing repetitive steps.

Instead, we illuminated the path to page customization. We encourage you to explore yourself and create eye-catching web pages with Elementor.

However, we’ll show you how to create professional and essential pages for your ecommerce store in a few clicks in the bonus section of this content. So, keep reading.

Step 6 – Add Ecommerce Functionalities to Your Website

It’s time to add ecommerce functionalities to your store. We’ll install and activate another quintessential and popular plugin – WooCommerce for that.

It will help us add and manage products, accept online payments, set shipping and taxation fees, and manage other aspects of e-commerce businesses. Let’s install it.

Head over to your WordPress Admin Panel > Plugins > Add New Plugin. Afterward, search for ‘WooCommerce’ in the “Search Plugins” field on the top right-hand side.

Now, press “Install Now” button of WooCommerce plugin. Once it gets installed, click ‘Activate’ button.

Install and activate WooCommerce

You’ll then visit the WooCommerce setup page. Hit “Skip guided setup” link to avoid following the lengthy setup process.

Click skip guided setup

Then, choose your store country and click “Go to my store” button.

Click go to my store button

That’s it. You now need to work with WooCommerce settings.

Explore and Configure WooCommerce Settings

First, head to WP Admin Panel > WooCommerce > Settings.

Go to add new product

Then, write your product title in “Add new product” field.

Write product name in the add new product field

Now, add your product description to “Product description” box.

Write product description in the product description box

After that, head to “Product data –” area and click on the drop-down menu beside “Product data –” option. This menu lets you define your product type, and it contains the following product types:
